The growing complexity of the digital ecosystem in combination with increasing global risks entail the danger that enforcing cybersecurity may bypass other fundamental values like equality, fairness or privacy, whereas downplaying cybersecurity would undermine citizens’ trust and confidence in the digital infrastructure. For tackling this challenge, the European Commission has chosen the CANVAS Consortium – Constructing an Alliance for Value-driven Cybersecurity – to unify technology developers with legal and ethical scholar and social scientists to approach the challenge how cybersecurity can be aligned with European values and fundamental rights. Within three years, CANVAS aims to bring together stakeholders from key areas of the European Digital Agenda – the health system, business/finance, and law enforcement/national security – for discussing challenges and solutions when aligning cybersecurity with ethics. A special focus of CANVAS is on raising awareness on the ethics of cybersecurity through teaching in academia and industry.

KONFIDO is part of the CANVAS Alliance Partners and it will work with CANVAS on a case study around cross-border eHealth data exchange with major focus on the entailed ethical aspects.



The main aim of CIPSEC is to create a unified security framework that orchestrates state-of-the-art heterogeneous security products to offer high levels of protection in IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) departments of CIs.

CIPSEC will collaborate with KONFIDO, in order to study how KONFIDO makes an enhancement of the trust and security of interoperable eHealth services and how CIPSEC protects interconnected medical devices.

In particular, CIPSEC-KONFIDO collaboration will be based on:

  • Finding commonalities between requirements of both projects for health sector, specially at storage level.
  • Studying the application security frameworks in health scenarios in cross-border cases, with the associated change of regulation.
  • Studying innovative cryptography techniques.

Funded under the European Commission's H2020 programme, this brand-new project will contribute to making the Digital Single Market a safer and more trusted by promoting the uptake and understanding of cutting-edge cybersecurity and privacy services which emerge from Research and Innovation initiatives across Europe. First to benefit are SMEs who will have unlimited access to a marketplace and catalogue of new services that can improve their services and ensure that cybersecurity becomes a unique selling point for them.

KONFIDO attended the first Concentration Meeting that took place in Brussels, on April 16, 2018. The objective of the meeting was to investigate the current R&I landscape in the field of cybersecurity and privacy and to identify common themes and challenges for clustering activities. During the meeting, the KONFIDO Coordinator gave a Lightning Talk. KONFIDO is also listed in the Observatory.



The project’s goal is to develop a practical eHealth framework and ICT infrastructure based on existing national infrastructures, that will enable secure access to patient health information, particularly with respect to a basic Patient Summary and ePrescription, between European healthcare systems.

KONFIDO builds its security mechanisms on top of the OpenNCP implementation. Soon after the KONFIDO launch, the KONFIDO coordinator and partners held a telco with the OpenNCP coordinator and the OpenNCP technical manager to present the KONFIDO project and its development plan, while representatives of OpenNCP presented how eHDSI works and their release plan for the next versions of OpenNCP. In addition, a representative of the KONFIDO Consortium attended the 2018 eHDSI Technical Boot Camp, held in Brussels, in April 25-26, 2018, to reinforce the liaison between the two projects.



SHiELD will unlock the value of health data to European citizens and businesses by overcoming security and regulatory challenges that today prevent this data being exchanged with those who need it. This will make it possible to provide better health care to mobile citizens across European borders, and facilitate legitimate commercial uses of health data.

In terms of the SHiELD-KONFIDO collaboration, representatives of the two projects had a joint meeting in London, on February 28, 2018, the two projects co-organize a joint Special Issue in the IET Software journal, and a representative from each project attended the 2018 eHDSI Technical Boot Camp, held in Brussels, on April 25-26, 2018. Another joint KONFIDO-SHiELD meeting took place in conjunction with the 7th KONFIDO plenary meeting in Paris, on May 22, 2019. Furthermore, partners from KONFIDO and SHiELD collaborated towards the elicitation of ethical requirements in the context of the exchange of eHealth data that resulted on a conference paper entitled "Resolving Stakeholder Tussles in Healthcare Systems: Ethical Challenges to Data Protection".



GHOST aims to deploy a highly usable and effective security framework for smart home residents. The project will apply behavioural design principles for the elaboration of a novel reference architecture for user-centric cyber security in smart home environments. This architecture will stimulate security-friendly user behaviour enforced by an unobtrusive and user-comprehensible solution. At the core of the GHOST solution lies a smart home network gateway, supporting a wide range of wired and wireless technologies. A set of software-enabled security services will be embedded to the gateway with the ambition to offer corporate level security down to regular citizens for personal use in their homes. GHOST will equip consumers with their own cyber security inspection, discovery and decision toolset, and shift security focus paradigm from incoming data flows to the awareness and control of data going out.

GHOST uses blockchain technology in an IoT network of multiple devices to ensure data integrity for crucial data exchange in the process of distributed decision making. KONFIDO and GHOST exchange ideas and knowledge on the use of blockchain and smart contracts for data integrity.
